“Any act of kindness is an act of almost
unadulterated courage.” (Hodson,2012) This is what I have learnt from a woman
with an incredible and implausible super power which breaks reader’s hearts,
and make them start crying, tears start falling, shoes start getting wet. This
woman is totally different from us. She has designed over thousands of books in
every genre of fiction and non-fiction. A story tells about how could she get
the idea of Wonder (her first novel). On a trip outside New York City with her
two young sons, Caleb and Joseph. She came across a little girl who was certain
that she had Treacher-Collins syndrome. The little girl’s appearance shocked
the woman and the two sons. “I was thinking in terms of the little girls feeling?”
she wondered.”—Mrs. Palacio (Peter, 2013).
The author of Wonder, RJ Palacio is
a graphic designer by day and writer by night, who was born on July 13, 1963 in
NYC. In the next few paragraphs I will describe the life of Palacio and let you
explore how she has created great stories for us to experience.
“When given the choice between being right
or being kind, choose kind.”—RJ Palacio. (Marco, 2013)
Though her father Marco Palacio
works as a tournament director at Interstate Poker Club. Her supportive mother,
Nelly Jaramillo is being an author of fiction and non-fiction. Mr. and Mrs.
Palacio raised RJ up to be an adult with a precious quote, “life has taken this
strange, unexpected turn.”
In addition, Palacio attended The High
School of Art & Design in Manhattan, and then majored in illustration at
the Parsons School of Design. She spent her junior year at American University
in Paris. Because of her interest on Art and Design, she appeared in The
Village Voice being an art director of several book publishing as her early
jobs. Mrs. Palacio now is living in Brooklyn, NYC with her two sons, and two
dogs, Bear and Beau, they all live as a fairly typical family with great
happiness.
“Sometimes
I think my head is so big because it is full of dreams!” (Goodreads.com) Her
debut novel, Wonder has been on the list of New York Times bestseller since
March, 2012 and has sold over 5 million copies worldwide. The book has a over
10 years old ordinary kid called Auggie who has been doing several times of plastic
surgeries because of his weirdness. He always gets stared at wherever he goes,
the only thing he could do is to look down. The book’s message of kindness has
inspired the choose kind movement, and has been embraced by readers, young and
old around the world. Since its publication on February 14, 2012, Wonder has
become a favourite of teachers and educators all over the world. 365 pays of
Wonder, (August, 2014), and Auggie & Me (October, 2015) are other famous
publication of Mrs. Palacio which include the extra stories of the original
novels.
“Incredibly
charming, brutal & brilliant.” (Andy, 2018) After I read though all the
pages in the book, I realized that we ought to never ever judge a boy by his
face. Everyone should just follow the day and reach for the sun! “If you read
one book this year, make it this one, it has the power to strike at your hearts
and change your mind.” (Andy, 2018)
